University of Waikato Law & Management Building
-
This 5,000m² complex establishes a strong civic presence on a prominent corner site, conceived as a gateway into the university campus. The design responds to a sloping topography to create dynamic circulation, layered spatial sequences, and social learning environments that encourage interaction and connection. The architectural expression is defined by a clear play of mass and void, with a journey through the building that reveals changing relationships between light, structure, and space.
A robust material palette expresses academic and civic values, with concrete conveying permanence, steel providing strength, glass introducing transparency, and timber adding warmth. Flexible teaching and office environments support evolving pedagogical needs, with adaptable layouts and shared learning spaces. Sustainability, natural ventilation, and efficiency are integrated throughout.
The project also acknowledges cultural narratives and Māori pedagogy, framing learning as a journey of reflection and discovery. Recognised with NZIA Architecture Awards and as a finalist in the World Architecture Awards, the building stands as a significant academic and civic landmark.
